Academic opportunities

Waniora Public School offers a wide variety of academic opportunities throughout the school year. Here is a selection of activities our students are involved in.

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools

International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) are independent skills-based assessments with a competition element. Each year we have many students participate in areas including Computer Skills, Science, Spelling, Writing, English and Mathematics.

Seacliff Community of Schools Public Speaking Competition

A whole school initiative with a student selected from Stage 1, 2 and 3 to represent our school. This competition is always of a very high standard, with our school achieving several winners in past years.

Seacliff Community of Schools Debating Competition

Stage 3 students participate in several debates within the Seacliff Community of Schools. An excellent competition with high engagement by students and external adjudicators. Our school are consistently strong performers.

NSW Premier’s Spelling Bee

A fun and engaging competition for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students to challenge themselves with spelling words.

Science Fair

A whole school biannual event, where Stage 2 and Stage 3 students showcase and explain their inventions and experiments to the whole School Community. Finalists from Stage 3 are selected, by an external panel of experts, to represent our school at the University of Wollongong Illawarra Coal Science Fair.

Academically gifted class

Year 5 students are given the opportunity to apply for entry into the regional academically gifted program.

Additional lunchtime activities

Throughout the year we offer a variety of additional activities at lunchtime including coding, chess club, digital photo / film editing.
